My old 2016 Toyota Corolla S had the CVT which used "simulated" shifts to make the variable ratio transmission less noticeable and make it feel more like a regular transmission with gears. I suspect the internal door that regulates outside air is what's causing the whistling. Next time you hear that noise try pushing the recirculation button and see how it changes the noise. Steve.
