I used Rick's self-guided tours in his Venice book for Doge's Palace and the Bascilica. His tour through the Palace tells you literally how to get down to the prison cells and out again. Also, his self-guided walking tour of Venice is really good, too.I learned much more from the guided tour, and I had more fun - the tour guide made a lot of jokes.
