The ticking noise could be that you are snesative to the ticking noise that Duramax engines make, some more than others. The valve lash seems to be a noise maker. I hear ticking in my engine, but I believe I'm pretty sensitive to it. A little bit less noisy with 15W-40 oil vs 5w-40. But the erratic idling is something that you should address.. It only happens while the truck is running and it's coming from the engine clearly herd from the wheel wells. It sounds like a hot exhaust cooling down and the crack/pop/ticks you get. Pop-off pressures are (don't quote me on this) around 1300-1700lbs. for most diesel engines IIRC, so they can get a little noisy, especially when it's cold out.All Duramax™ engines are manufactured to very close tolerances to meet the durability and reliability standards. Cause This ticking noise is caused by oil bubbling and excited by the V8 configuration and combustion sequence. Some people do find different brand oil seems to quieten the noise some but experimentation is key for some because not all oils act the same in all engines...
